Complex Bending and Short-Run Production

Auto Temp manufactures flat and curved tempered glass to customer drawings, on five furnaces covering four bend types.

  • Flat, cylindrical and compound bending, formed without tooling, to a minimum radius of 1,000 mm and a maximum size of 1,500 mm by 1,600 mm on the large shape line.
  • Complex bending, formed against tooling built in house, to a maximum depth of bend of 210 mm and a maximum size of 1,100 mm by 1,700 mm. Full press bending is also available.

Radius and depth of bend come from different processes, so it is worth stating which a part needs rather than leaving it to be inferred. Where a geometry sits close to a boundary, Auto Temp's engineers review the drawing and say which process applies.

The pre-processing department is built for short runs. A production run measured in hundreds is a normal order, and glass is processed from 3.5 mm to 10.0 mm in thickness.

Engineered, Tempered and Assembled in Batavia, Ohio

Every step happens in one plant, from the first drawing review to the packed part.

  • Engineering review, and reverse engineering from a physical sample where no drawing exists
  • Tooling, gauges and fixtures machined in house
  • Cutting, grinding and drilling, with in-house CAD producing the cutting program
  • Silkscreen and digital printing, fired in before tempering
  • Tempering and bending on five furnaces
  • Hardware bonding and prefabricated assembly
  • Custom packing, including for international export
  • Raw glass is purchased from seven North American float facilities, in any color available in the market. The plant has operated in Batavia since 1992, and sits within easy reach of ground, air and water shipping.

Because the work stays in one place, a part is inspected against its drawing by the people who made it, and a defect is found before shipping rather than on a customer's line.

Every step happens in one plant, from the first drawing review to the packed part.

Certifications and Manufacturing Standards

Two of these are certifications Auto Temp holds. Two are standards Auto Temp manufactures to. The distinction matters when comparing suppliers.

Certifications held

  • ISO 9001:2015 registered. Certifies the business rather than the glass. Documented processes, controlled records, tracked nonconformance, and independent audit.
  • ECE certified. The vehicle standards issued under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, and the reference framework for vehicle glazing across much of the world outside North America.

Standards manufactured to

  • FMVSS 205. The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for glazing materials. It defines which glazing types may be used in which positions on a vehicle, and applies across passenger cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles and campers.
  • ANSI/SAE Z26.1. The American National Standard for safety glazing materials, covering impact performance, fragmentation behavior, optical quality and light transmittance. FMVSS 205 incorporates it by reference.

Together, these let a part be specified against either the North American or the European framework without changing the supplier. Parts are held to a thickness tolerance of plus zero, minus 0.03 inch, and every part is visually inspected, fragmentation tested and optically tested before it leaves Batavia.

OEM Service Glass and Replacement Parts

Auto Temp warehouses finished parts as well as manufacturing them, which is what makes service supply possible after a production program ends.

  • Finished inventory held at a 76,000 square foot warehouse near Cincinnati
  • Drop shipped in single unit quantities to dealers and distribution centers worldwide
  • Bulk truckload supply to distribution points
  • Specialized packaging for international export

Machines built under a finished program stay in service for years, and the glass in them still breaks. Holding finished inventory means a replacement part ships from stock rather than waiting on a production run to be scheduled.
